Landais Pony History & Origin

The Landais pony is a very ancient breed that probably descends from the Tarpan horse of the steppes but has more recently been influenced by infusion of Arabian and English blood (successive invasions).

Two populations survived in the Landes area and evolved differently, in spite of some interbreeding between the two at the beginning of the 20th century.

These are the pony of the pines or the Lédon pony in the coastal areas, which has now disappeared, and the Barthais pony of the meadows along the Adour river, which is the strain from which modern Landais ponies descend.
