Mérens Pony History & Origin

The Merens (also known as Ariègeoise de Mérens, Mérenguais) is an ancient native breed of pony from the Ariege Pyrenees, in France, and looks very much like the British Fell pony - and also the Friesian. The breed is thought to have existed since prehistoric times and paintings of horses very similar to the Merens can be found on the walls of the cave at Niaux.

Due to its remote location in the Ariegeois mountains of the Pyrenees, over several millennia, a distinctive 'breed type' has evolved. The ponies remain most strongly populated in this region, and can also be found in surrounding regions, but remain mostly indigenous to France.

Mérens Pony Area of Breeding

The ponies are typically raised outside all year round, and foals are born during the spring snows without difficulty. As the weather turns warm, in June, herds are led to summer pastures to enjoy freedom for months at a time in the mountains. It is said that this time in the mountains with other Merens ponies is what gives the breed their outstanding mental balance.

Mérens Pony Uses

A strong pony, the Merens has long been used by the 'Montagnol' (mountain farmer) in the past in South West France for agricultural work such as ploughing, and hauling materials like minerals and timber. It is 'low to the ground', and very sure-footed, so very suitable for carrying loads over rough, steep terrain.

The ponies are strong enough to carry adults and are ideal for mountain trekking. Their gentle temperament makes them ideal for novice riders and children, although as with all native ponies, the Merens has a strong, independent character and a mind of his own, so needs to be well taught. With good handling, these ponies become devoted.
